USC Arts in Action puts music to work, with social change in mind
Inaugural event, focusing on homelessness, brings USC musicians together with artists and performers from Skid Row

USC Arts in Action, a new program supporting arts activities that facilitate positive social change in Los Angeles, kicked off with its inaugural event, “Artists Addressing Homelessness,” a weeklong collaboration Oct. 8-13. The Urban Voices Project Choir, made up of artists and performers from L.A.’s Skid Row, teamed with USC musicians including students from the USC Thornton School of Music for a performance and conversation Friday at the school’s Joyce J. Cammilleri Hall. The partners also put on a closing ceremony and jam session Saturday at the Skid Row History Museum & Archive. USC Arts in Action is an initiative of the USC provost’s office and Provost Michael Quick, who has made priorities of working to eliminate homelessness and of engaging the arts for social change.
