SUBJECT: 1999 Honorary Degree Recipients

I am pleased to announce that the following distinguished individuals will be awarded Honorary Degrees at the 1999 Commencement Exercises on Friday, May 14th .

• Warren Christopher, distinguished alumnus, former U. S. Secretary of State, noted attorney, and recipient of the nation’s highest civilian award, the Medal of Freedom. Mr. Christopher will also deliver the commencement address.

• Jon M. Huntsman, distinguished alumnus, chemical company executive, philanthropist, and champion of higher education and humanitarian causes.

• Rosa Parks, “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement,” moral leader and advocate for social justice.

• Flora Laney Thornton, philanthropist, visionary community leader, patron of the arts, and advocate of preventive medicine.

I encourage any interested academic unit to consider arranging a special event such as a seminar or dinner for our honorees while they are on campus. The cost for any function must be borne by the department or have prior approval by the cognizant dean if it is beyond departmental means.

Should you want to schedule an event for one of our honorees, please contact Mrs. Sheryl Collins at 740-4982 in the University Events office, who is responsible for coordinating the honorees’ schedules.

Subject: Public Meetings on Doheny Retrofit/Preservation Project

Shortly after we learned in November that Doheny Library would undergo a seismic retrofit next year, several teams of librarians, staff, faculty, and students were established to develop a set of detailed plans for the project. These groups have gathered substantial amounts of data and have explored many issues and options, even as we have been meeting with departments, other groups, and key individuals to frame issues and gather ideas. I invite you now to join me in reviewing and discussing the several draft plans that have recently been completed, including those for the relocation of collections, paging and other services, and staff and service point relocations. We will also discuss preliminary ideas for the redesign of Doheny interior spaces. Two public hearings, at which I and key project planners will be present, will be held on

Wednesday, April 28, 3:00-5:00 p.m. in MHP-101
