Veran Matic, center, founder of Yugoslavia’s Radio B-92 – a radio station that resisted government censorship – accepted the first Dean’s Award for Courage in Journalism from the Annenberg School at a reception held in his honor on Thursday, Oct. 14. The award was presented by Ed Cray, professor of journalism, right, who observed that Matic’s stand against authority is “at the core of our concept of honor.”

Matic broadcast independent, uncensored news to Yugoslavians in the months leading up to the crushing of Kosovo by the Serbian regime. The award was to have been presented at commencement last spring, but Matic was unable to attend. Interpreting at the ceremony was Kseniga Vidulic, left, a master’s degree candidate in international relations.
