AAAS Elects 3 USC Faculty as Fellows

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has elected three USC scientists to the rank of fellow:

• David Bottjer, professor of earth sciences, for contributions to the paleontology and paleoecology of periods of major extinctions in the geologic record and for service and leadership in professional affairs.

• Michael Melnick, professor of genetics in the School of Dentistry, for contributions to the field of craniofacial genetics and development, particularly for studies of genetic and etiologic mechanisms of cleft lip and cleft palate.

• Armand R. Tanguay Jr., associate professor of electrical engineering/electrophysics and materials science, for contributions to physical optics, optical materials and devices, and optical information processing and computing, including the invention of stratified-volume holographic optical elements.

Each will receive an official certificate Feb. 19 at the AAAS annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
