Midshipman 3rd class Brennan Slavik stands at attention while Lenicia B. Weemes Elementary School students prepare to say the pledge of allegiance.

Slavik, a sophomore history major, participated along with other midshipmen in an awards ceremony on Friday, April 13, honoring the 1,800 Weemes students who read 27,586 books as part of the annual USC Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps’ Partnership to Promote Literacy program.

All of USC’s 3rd-class midshipmen – 115 strong – took part in tutoring Weemes students in reading.

The Readathon, funded by a USC Neighborhood Outreach Grant, is co-sponsored by Weemes and NROTC.
