USC Viterbi Senior Named a Luce Scholar
Craig Western will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

USC Viterbi School of Engineering senior Craig Western is one of 18 students nationwide selected to participate in the highly competitive Luce Scholars program.

Western, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, will live and work in East Asia. He is the university’s 15th Luce Scholar since 1975.

The program’s purpose is to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society, particularly those students who have limited experience with Asian languages and culture.

At USC, Western has been involved in undergraduate research since his freshman year. As a member of USC’s Teamcore Research Group, he contributed to the development of software designed to optimize placement of security forces at international airports.

The program currently is operating at Los Angeles International airport and has received special commendation from the city.

Western has worked on two major NASA robotics projects through a position with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He is a team projects coordinator with USC Viterbi’s i-Podium program, using technology and innovation to facilitate interaction of students at USC with their counterparts in Taiwan and China.

As a global scholar, Western traveled to Taiwan, where he completed a summer marketing internship in Taipei as part of the USC Global Fellows Internship program. He also studied overseas in Spain. Most recently, he has been volunteering as a project manager for USC Engineers Without Borders, leading a rainfall catchment project to bring potable water to a rural village in Honduras.

He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. He has been a team organizer for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and he presently serves as an ambassador for the USC Kairos Society.
