Galen Center Murals Get Supersized

The Galen Center will be enormous, and its seven carved brick exterior murals being installed are among the largest in the world.

The murals each is 46 feet, 8 inches tall and 11 feet, 4 inches wide are the work of artist Dean Tschetter of Pasadena and his brother, brick sculptor Jay Tschetter of Denton, Neb., working with the collaboration of architect Fernando Vasquez and USC senior associate athletic director Carol Dougherty.

The seven panels, done in a 1930s and ’40s social realism style, depict basketball players, volleyball spiker, saxophonist, violinist, two dancers executing a lift, a mentor and child dancing, and a commencement scene.

The installations should be completed by May 1. The Galen Center is scheduled to open this fall.
