LOS ANGELES — Britt Williams, an All-Conference guard at USC in 1961 when he captained the Trojan football team, died of heart disease on Monday (Aug. 2) in San Mateo, Calif. He was 80.

Williams lettered for three seasons (1959-61) at USC after earning All-County honors at Las Lomas High High in Walnut Creek, Calif. As a 1959 sophomore, the Trojans went 8-2 in the final season of head coach Don Clark. John McKay took over as head coach in Williams' final two seasons. Williams was selected to play in the 1962 Hula Bowl.

He then became one of the most successful high school football coaches in Northern California's San Mateo County. After 12 years as an assistant at Aragon High in San Mateo, he spent 21 seasons (1979-99) as the head coach and compiled a 156-65-5 record that included six league titles and two CIF Central Coast Section championships. He continued as an assistant at Aragon from 2000 to 2007.

He was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Aragon High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

Williams is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter, Johanna, three grandchildren (Halo, Juliette, and Britt) and stepdaughter Jessica Redding.  He was predeceased by his former wife, Johanna's mother Mary Pedersen Williams, son Shay Williams and sister Cherie Williams.  His brother, Buzz, was the head coach at nearby San Mateo High for more than 30 years, through 1996.
