USC got its 21st medal—a silver in men's water polo--on the final day of the 2020 Olympics, Day 16 (Sunday, Aug. 8, in Tokyo), equaling its medal output in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Troy's 11 gold medals in Tokyo were one shy of its most ever in an Olympics and its 21 overall medals tied for the school's fourth most ever.
- Although Greece fell to Serbia in the men's water polo gold medal match, 13-10, Kostas Genidounias became USC's first Greek Olympian to win a medal in any sport as his team took home a silver. Greece tied the match, 10-10, early in the fourth quarter but the Serbs scored three unanswered goals in the final 6:15 for the victory. Genidounias was scoreless in the match.
- In the 5th-6th place classification game, Croatia beat the U.S., 14-11. Neither Trojan—Hannes Daube or Marko Vavic—scored for the U.S., which finished the Olympic men's water polo competition in sixth place.
