Defending Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad earned a silver medal and shattered the previous world record in the women's 400m hurdles final during the first section of action on the sixth day of track and field at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo today (Aug. 4). The memorable final included three Trojans and three of the four fastest times in history.
The 2016 Olympic champion Muhammad (USC 2012) earned a silver medal in the women's 400m hurdles by breaking the previous world record by nearly a third of a second with a time of 51.58. It was also a PR of 0.58 seconds for Muhammad who set the then world record of 52.16 at the 2019 World Championships. Fellow American Sydney McLaughlin won with a world record of 51.46 and Femke Bol of the Netherlands finished third with the fourth-fastest time ever run by a woman of 52.03.
Anna Cockrell (USC 2021), the 2021 NCAA 100m and 400m hurdles champion and school record holder, was disqualified for a lane violation. Gianna Woodruff (current USC grad student/Washington undergraduate), competing for Panama, placed seventh with a time of 55.84.
