USC's cumulative 21-team multiyear NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 983 is the school's best ever, the sixth year in a row that Troy hit an all-time high, and 13 Trojan sports posted an APR that equaled or exceeded last year's score, according to data that was released today (May 8) by the NCAA.
 
Also, 15 USC teams had an APR that was above or equal to the national average for their sport in the annual scorecard of academic achievement for all Division I teams.
 
A team's APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation to generate a measure of academic performance. Each year, the APR creates a snapshot of a team's academic success as it tracks the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. Today's APR is a multiyear rate based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years. APR scores below 930 lead to penalties that include practice restrictions, playing season reductions and post-season ineligibility. The NCAA began tracking APR in 2004-05.
 
"The academic performance of our teams, as highlighted by our continued success with APR numbers, demonstrates the hard work and dedication by our student-athletes as they take full advantage of their USC experience," said Dr. Denise Kwok, USC's senior associate athletic director in charge of Student-Athlete Academic Services.  "This is a University-wide collaborative effort in which USC's faculty and staff partner with the student-athletes and our SAAS team at the Stevens Academic Center to create an environment, along with the support of our coaches, in which our student-athletes can achieve their complete academic and athletic potential."
 
Twelve Trojan teams had at least a 990 APR, including 6 at 1000 (men's golf, men's track, men's volleyball, women's beach volleyball, women's cross country and women's golf).  It was the fifth consecutive year that women's cross country hit the 1000 mark, while men's volleyball did so for the fourth year in a row and both women's beach volleyball and women's golf scored 1000 for the third straight year.
 
Besides those 6 squads that recorded a perfect 1000 mark, the 3 other USC teams that this year posted or equaled their all-time high APR scores were men's basketball (973), women's rowing (995) and women's track (997).  Football's 972 was just a point lower than last year's program-best 973.
 
USC's 13 squads that equaled or exceeded their score from last year were:  baseball, men's basketball, men's golf, men's tennis, men's track, men's volleyball, men's water polo, women's beach volleyball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's rowing, women's soccer and women's track.
 
USC's 15 teams whose multiyear APR exceeded or equaled the national average for their sport were:  baseball, football, men's basketball, men's golf, men's tennis, men's track, men's volleyball, men's water polo, women's beach volleyball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's soccer and women's track.
 
In the 2017-18 single-year calculation that goes into the overall multiyear APR score, 9 USC teams registered a perfect 1000 score (men's golf, men's tennis, men's volleyball, women's beach volleyball, women's cross country, women's rowing, women's golf, women's soccer and women's track).
 
Last week, 6 USC teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding performance in the classroom:  men's golf, men's track, men's volleyball, women's beach volleyball, women's golf and women's cross country. Each team achieved an APR within the top 10 percent in their respective sports.
 
No USC sport was close to the NCAA APR of 930 that leads to penalties. In fact, all USC men's teams were at least 41 points above that baseline standard and all Trojan women's teams were at least 28 points above it.
