Judy McAlpine has been appointed president of the USC Radio Group. She is a longtime media executive in public broadcasting in the United States and Canada.
During her time as senior vice president for American Public Media in St. Paul, New York and Toronto, the weekly audience grew 38 percent for content on 1,000 stations across the country. She also led the expansion of BBC World Service’s reach in the United States and was a founding member of the Station Resource Group’s Classical Music Rising project, which aims to shape the future of the genre.
McAlpine previously held senior roles at CBC Radio in Toronto. Since 2016, she has operated her own consulting business focusing on nonprofit media working for successful enterprises such as American Public Media’s Marketplace and the digital strategies of Classical Music Rising.
The executive also has served as a music educator. She earned an elementary piano pedagogy and teacher certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and was trained in several musical education techniques. For five years, she ran a music studio aimed at children ages 2 to 8. She earned a BA in English and an MA in journalism from the University of Western Ontario.
USC Radio owns 12 stations, including KUSC, the nation’s No. 1 classical music station, and San Francisco’s KDFC.
