Best-selling author and herbal medicine expert Varro Tyler will be the featured speaker at a discussion of the future of herbs and plants in medicine at the USC Health Sciences Campus on Dec. 3.
The lecture, geared to both professional and lay audiences, is titled “What You Should Know About Herbal Medicine.” Tyler, dean emeritus at the Purdue University School of Pharmacy, achieved a national reputation as an herbal medicine expert with the publication of his best-selling book, The Honest Herbal.
He also is author of Herbs of Choice and numerous magazine and medical journal articles on the subject.
The USC School of Pharmacy invited Tyler to speak as part of its continuing effort to promote education in the fields of biochemical and clinical study of herbal and nutritional supplements.
In addition to an overview of the basics of herbal medicine, the lecture will also cover regulatory issues and the future of research into the uses of herbal dietary supplements in medicine.
A panel discussion of health experts and leading researchers and a question and answer session will follow the lecture.
The event begins at 3 p.m. on Dec. 3 in Mayer Auditorium.
The lecture is sponsored by The Rehnborg Center for Nutrition and Wellness, the research arm of Amway Corporation’s nutrition and wellness division.
