The encounters with Solar Storms in the past missions (mainly Apollo) and the need for Solar Storm Shelter & Emergency facility on the proposed 100-person Lunar Base are discussed. Radiation being the major problem in case of solar storms/winds/flares, the physiological effects of various kinds of cosmic radiation is studied. The suggested shielding methods and their effects over continued radiation is also studied.
The optimum requirements for a shelter, shielding the astronauts from the cosmic radiation are outlined and earlier proposals for such shelters discussed.
A new construction methodology for such shelters that can be extrapolated to structures on the Moon in general is made.
