Where Opera Stars Are Born
Only the most outstanding young opera singers from throughout Southern California, Arizona and Southern Nevada earn the privilege of competing in the 45th annual Metropolitan Opera Western Regional Audition Finals on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. in Bovard Auditorium. On hand to judge the event and distribute the cash prizes will be Jonathan Friend, artistic administrator, Metropolitan Opera; Mikael Eliasen, Curtis Institute of Music; Richard Pearlman, Lyric Opera of Chicago; and soprano Benita Valente.
Across the country, 2,500 young singers from 60 districts vie for the opportunity to be among the 25 regional winners who finally advance to the New York competition. Ultimately five national grand winners will each be awarded $15,000. Additional cash prizes and educational opportunities are made available to competitors at all levels.
The purpose of the auditions is to discover exceptionally talented opera singers and assist them in their development, to discover new talent for the Metropolitan Opera and to search for possible participants for the Lindermann Young Artists Development Program at the Met. Among the internationally known opera stars that have previously won the Western Regional Auditions are Thomas Hampson, Deborah Voigt and Carol Vaness.
Saturday, Oct. 27, 7 p.m. Bovard Auditorium. $25 general, $20 faculty/staff, $10 USC students. Call 213-740-7111 for tickets.
