Grant-Writing Project Helps Local School

Classroom projects by two teams of students at the USC Marshall School of Business have earned nearly $7,000 in corporate grants for a Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school.

Both teams were part of WRIT 340, the Advanced Business Writing class at USC Marshall. As part of class assignments, the groups had to research social-responsibility programs at various corporations and identify relevant funding opportunities, then put together grant applications on behalf of Delevan Drive Elementary School in the Glassell Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

“Learning to communicate, whether it’s writing, making speeches or creating presentations, is vital for success in business,” said Jolanta Aritz, a professor in USC Marshall’s Center for Management Communications and teacher of the grant-winning teams.

“The project taught the students some useful lessons about a specific kind of writing for grant applications and allowed them to help make the world a little better too. Everybody got to win.”

A team of Ani Bogossian, Miki Chan, Daisy Lin, Winner Ng and Hon Cheung Wong wrote a proposal that received $4,800 from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.

The “Classroom of Nature” grant will finance an outdoor classroom to enhance students’ learning while allowing them to interact with the environment around Delevan Drive Elementary. The converted green space can function as a classroom for science, mathematics or history. The USC Marshall students volunteered to work with school officials over the summer to implement the project.

A second team of Ilya Voziyan, John Gillilan, Milena Bogdanova, Philip Alen and Shari Vasquez secured a $2,000 technology grant from Washington Mutual. The grant was used to purchase an Apple 20-inch iMac computer for Delevan Drive students.
